The picture illustrates how much sugar was produced and consumed in India between 2001 and 2011.
Overall, there were increases in the number of both sugar production and consumption. It is also important to note that the figure for consumption was much more stable than that for production.
Looking first at the production of sugar, around 18 million tonnes of sugar were produced in 2001. It then increased slightly to 19 million tonnes after a year before bottoming out at 13 million tonnes in 2005. However, this figure witnessed a significant recovery to peak at 28 million tonnes in late 2006 before dropping again to 16 million tonnes in 2009. After that, it rose noticeably to 26 million tonnes in the last year.
Moving on to the consumption of sugar, in the first year, 15 million tonnes of sugar were used. This number then grew moderately to 20 million tonnes two years later, with a subsequent fluctuation from 2003 to 2010. After that, it increased modestly to 23 million tonnes in 2011.
