Initially, Indian residents produced nearly 18 million tonnes of sugar, which was 3 million tonnes higher than that of consumption. In 2003, the demands of using sugar in India experienced a gradual increase to exactly 20 million tonnes and overtook the yield of sugar manufacture. The similar trend kept continuing in 2005 with consumption amount was 19 million tonnes of sugar and production amount was 13 million tonnes of sugar.
In 2007, the amount of sugar manufacture was boosted to reach a peak at around 28 million tonnes, whereas sugar demands remained nearly stable at around 20 million tonnes. In the last year, despite a plummet in 2009, Indian residents demands of sugar surged sharply and dominated the chart at about 26 million tonnes; meanwhile, consumption amount in this nation showed a sustainable increase to nearly 23 million tonnes of sugar.
