The line graph illustrates the percentage of the population living in the cities in four Asian countries (Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia) from 1970 to 2020, with forecasts for 2030 and 2040.

Overall, the population rates of Malaysia and Indonesia significantly rose over the period, while the percentage of the population rate of the Philippines and Thailand moved slowly.

In 1970, the population rates of Malaysia and the Philippines were both around 30%, respectively. The Philippines’ rate increased sharply in the decade. After 1990, Malaysia’s rate grew dramatically. The Philippines decreased from 1990 to 2020 but then started grow again. In 2040, the Malaysian population living in cities is expected to reach 85% while in the Philippines, it may be less than 10%.

In the early 1970s, the rates of Indonesia and Thailand were nearly 15% and 20%. They grew at the same difference until the year 2000. In that year, they showed the same percentage, which was 25%. However, then the Indonesian population increased significantly. During this growth, Indonesia surpassed the Philippines in 2010, with rates at 40%. In 2040, the Indonesian and Thai populations’ rates will reach 65% and 50%.
