Overall, the population number rose and will keep increasing in the future. Despite Indonesia having initially the fewest urban population, it increased drastically placing it in second place in the final 3 decades.
Although Malaysia had about 30% of its population living in cities in 1970, it has significantly started soaring from 1990 and ended up having an amount of approximately 75%, being speculated to grow by 10% more by the next two decades (2030 and 2040). Philippines, being ranked first by urban population in 1970 with above 30%, saw a sharp change in 1990. After climbing to about 50% of people living in cities, it then gradually decreased till 2020 with almost 10%. However, from 2020 it started slightly going up and it is predicted to be at somewhat above 50% in 2040.
In 1970, Thailand had about 18% of urban population. Despite it plateauing from 1990 till 2020 at about 30%, it is speculated that the number will increase by approximately 15% in the next two decades. Even though Indonesia was ranked in 1970 with the least locals living in cities at somewhat 15%, it kept growing its amount decade by decade reaching an amount of 50% in 2020. It is predicted that it will keep increasing in 2040 by about 10%.
