The line graph compares the employment figures in four different fields of the economy in the United States from 1960 and 2020 with 20-year intervals
Overall, healthcare and retail sectors substantially increased throughout, while the reverse was true for the number of jobs in manufacturing and agriculture sectors, which both saw declining over time.
In 1960, manufacturing had the highest figure in this country, with 15 million jobs, far ahead of other types of jobs. Over the next two decades, although the number steadily increased by 5 million, and reaching its peak at 20 million, it experienced a downward trend, noticeably decreasing to well under 14 million from 1980 onwards. The figure of jobs for agriculture sector which was just over 5 million jobs, saw a twofold drop during the given period, becoming the least popular sector of the economy in US.
The figure of remaining types of field – retail and healthcare – started their period at roughly about 5 and 2.5 respectively, after which followed similar trajectories to each other until 2000, having an upward trend. Staying at 15 million and approximately 11 million job, both finished at the roughly same figure at just over 15 million in 2005.
