Overall, during the entire time period Germany was the highest spender, and France spent the second highest amount of money on books. Although Italy was at the third rank in regard to sum of money Italians spent on books in the beginning, it was surpassed by Austria, ending up in the fourth spot.
Germans between 1995 and 2005 spent the most amount of money relative to other countries. From 1995 to 2003 their expenditure fluctuated between 80 and 90 million dollars yearly, but by 2005 they spent about 95 million dollars on books. France always spent the second highest sum on books, rising steadily during the period from just under 60 million to roughly 78 million dollars.
Amount of money Italians spent on books from 1995 to 2005 fluctuated between slightly under 50 million dollars to just above 60 million. Austrians in 1995 spent the least amount on books, almost 30 million US dollars, but as time went on the expenditure increased ending up at 40 million in 2001, after which it experienced a massive rise, spending slightly more than 70 million US dollars in 2005, ending up in third place.
