The line graph illustrates the expenditure on books in four European countries from 1995 to 2005.
Overall, Germany showed the biggest amount of spending on reading materials over the entire period. It is clear that the total amount of money spent on books increased in all four places.
In 1995, German expenditure was around $80 million, and it fluctuated between about $80 million and $90 million until 2003 before rising to approximately $96 million in 2005. The figure for France was around $58 million in 1995, while it steadily increased over ten years and reached about $77 million.
Spending in Italy stood at just below $50 million in 1995 and hovered at around $50 million over the next six years before moderately growing to just above $60 million in 2003. In terms of Austrian spending, in 1995, this accounted for nearly $30 million before going up to $40 million in 1999, and remained stable over the next two years before drastically increased to just above $70 million.
