The line chart compares the average attendance at top-level football matches in Italy, England, and Germany. They are estimated in thousands of people. Overall, the charts demonstrate a general upward trend in almost all countries, with the exception of Italy. Moreover, the most notable change can be seen in Germany, which experienced a significant growth and surpassed the remaining two countries to record the highest ranking, compared to Italy.
In 1980, Italy had the highest attendance figure, reaching around 35,000. This is followed by a slow increase and peaking at 37,000 in 1986. However, in the next 18 years, there was a considerable decrease, from 37,000 to just 24,000, which was the lowest figure at the end of the period.
With respect to England, the region began with the second-highest figures, representing 26,000, while Germany had slightly lower attendance, around 25,000. In 1986, both England and Germany saw a drop to 23,000 and under 20,000, respectively. Nevertheless, in 1992, there was a notable rise in German attendance and reaching its highest point at nearly 35,000; this country overtook England and Italy to rank in the top spot. In contrast, England experienced a slower growth rate, standing at 33,000 by 2004.
