The given chart illustrates the percentages of four means of transportation (bus, car, bike, foot) which were used to commute to and from workplace by residents living in a city in Europe in three different years (1960, 1980, 2000).
Overall, as can be seen from the chart, the data of traveling by car witnessed an upward trend, while the proportion of people using bus for commuting experienced a fluctuation. By contrast, there was a downward trend in both the percentages of transporting by bike and foot.
In 1960, car was a type of commuting starting at the lowest data among four surveyed sectors, with only 6%. The percentage of car traveling observed a considerable increase (6% to beyond 35%) and it ended with the highest position in four sectors. In addition, after rising from 20% to under 27% in 1980, the share of bus used for transportation dropped to below 20% in 2000.
On the other hand, the statistics of going to and from work by foot and bike followed a same pattern, both were recorded with a significant decrease. To be specific, before hitting the lowest point at 10% and under 10% in 2000, the shares of foot and bike traveling plunged gradually over 3 years (from 35% to lower 20% to 10% and under 30% to 25% to 10%).
