The graph gives information about how many people from four countries applied to one university in the UK from 1999 to 2003. Overall, there was an increasing trend in the number of applicants from three out of four countries listed. Notably, the pattern remained consistent throughout the period except for European applicants.
The figures for European Nations had remained dominant for the first two years albeit slightly declined from 30,000 to 25,000. In contrast, only half of that number came from the Far East (15,000), and even fewer from the Middle East (10,000).
In 2001, the picture changed when the number of Far East applicants exceeded European applicants by almost 3,000. After that, these figures went in opposite directions, with the Far East finishing at 30,000 – three times greater than Europe. The numbers of Middle Eastern applicants rose to 20,000 after a slight drop in 2002. The number of applicants from Africa remained the lowest throughout, barely exceeding 5,000.
