In total, the number of tourists witnessed a steady rise from 1 million in 2010 to about 2.7 million in 2016. The remaining one year saw an astronomical increase, which peaked at 3.5 million.
At the beginning, the visitors who chose to stay on the island were more than those on cruise ships. About 700,000 stayed on the island between 2010 and 2011. Between 2011 and 2013, there was a significant rise in the number of Islanders. Thereafter, the number hovered around 1.5 million for the rest of the period. On the other hand, visitors who chose to stay on cruise ships were about 300,000 at the initial time. This number increased to about 2 million at the end of 2017.
