The line graph illustrates attendance figures, in thousands, for five distinct categories of museums in the UK over a 20-year period spanning from 1999 to 2019.
Overall, most museum types experienced a predominant upward trend, while History and Culture museums being the sole exceptions. Additionally, Art museums consistently maintained their lead as the most popular attraction throughout the entire timeframe.
Regarding museum types that increased, Art museums recorded the highest attendance at approximately 100,000 visitors. Over the following two decades, this figure continued to climb and reached 150,000 visitors by 2019. A more dramatic increase was observed in Science museums, where the visitor count stood at around 70,000 initially, before surging and surpassing History museums by 2009 to reach an incredible figure of 130,000 visitors by the end of the period. Meanwhile, Natural History Museums also increased, but to a lesser extent, with the attendance rose slightly from 50,000 to nearly 60,000 in 2019.
Regarding the other two categories, History and Cultural museums attracted a number of visitors at around 60,000 and 40,000. Both types experienced a decline, with their figures falling to approximately 65.000 and 45,000 respectively.
