The pie chart illustrates the proportion of online revenue generated by various retail industries in the U.S. in 2005 and 2010.
Overall, electronics & home appliances and food & beverages recorded the highest online sales figures among all sectors in both years. Electronic devices and household appliances were the most purchased category in 2005, whereas edible goods became the top-selling items in 2010.
In 2005, the two largest retail sectors were electronics & household appliances and culinary products, accounting for 35% and 22% of online sales respectively. By 2010, food & beverages had increased their share to 32%, overtaking electronics & appliances, which declined by 5%, falling to 30%. This resulted in a shift in ranking between the two sectors.
The remaining retail categories were home furniture and video games. Home furnishings made up 25% of online sales in 2005, but this figure dropped by 10% to 15% in 2010. In contrast, video games, which had the smallest share in 2005, grew significantly to become the third-largest category in 2010, reaching 23%.
