Overall, as can be seen that the percentage of urban residents in all four countries show an upward trend. Notably, the USA consistently maintaining the highest figures throughout.
In 1970, around 70% of the US population lived in cities. This figure rose steadily to just below 90% by 2010 and is projected to reach 90% by 2030. A similar but more dramatic trend was seen in Korea, where the urban population started at 40%, surged to roughly 85% in 2010, and is expected to climb slightly to match the USA’s 90% by the end of the period.
China and India had much lower levels of urbanization at the beginning of the period, both at around 20% in 1970. For China, the percentage stayed almost the same until 1990, before increasing quickly and overtaking India’s figure in the mid-1990s. It is forecast that China’s urban population will continue to rise and finish at more than 65% in 2030. In contrast, India’s rate grew slowly but steadily throughout the period and is expected to remain below 40% by 2030.
