Overall, as can be seen that the percentage of urban residents in all four countries show an upward trend. Notably, the USA consistently maintaining the highest figures throughout.
In 1970, around 70% of the US population lived in cities. This figure rose steadily to just below 90% by 2010 and is projected to reach 90% by 2030. A similar but more dramatic trend was seen in Korea, where the urban population started at 40%, surged to roughly 85% in 2010, and is expected to climb slightly to match the USA’s 90% by the end of the period.
Both China and India had relatively low urban populations of about 20% in 1970. While China’s figure remained unchanged until 1990, India’s rose gradually over the same period and is predicted to reach just under 40% by 2030. The proportion of urban dwellers in China began to rise sharply in the mid-1990s, surpassing India’s rate, and is forecast to end the period at over 65%.
