Overall, the number of residents in urban areas in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia will increase over time. It is also clear that Malaysia will have the highest number of people living in the city by 2040.
In 1970, 30% of Malaysians were living in the cities. This percentage climbed up by 10% after 10 years, and by the year 2000, it reached 60% outnumbering other cities in Asia. This percentage consistently grew over time, and it was predicted that it will reach up to 80% by 2040. On the other hand, the cities in the Philippines were the most populated in 1970 with 32%. Its percentage fluctuated from 1980 to 2010, and it was forecasted to reach 50% by 2040.
On the contrary, the urban areas in Indonesia were the least populated in 1970 with around 13% and rose marginally after a decade. However, its percentage went up by approximately 15% every 10 years, reaching 60% by 2040, the second largest populated country among others. Whereas in Thailand, 18% was living in the metropolitan area in 1970. Its growth was steady until 2020 with 30% and by the end of the period, it was approximated that more than 45% of Thailanders will be residing in the city.
