The presented line graph depicts the usage of four different vehicle types in the transportation of commodities: road, water, rail and pipeline in the UK in period of 28 years between 1974 and 2002.
Overall, despite a noticeable upward trend in all four categories, each of them experienced fluctuations throughout the period, and the increase rate varies significantly. As can be seen from the illustration, road remained the most widely utilized transport mode, whereas pipeline also kept its position as the least popular transport type instead.
According to the diagram, the amount of goods distributed by road in 1974 was approximately 75 million tones, which steadily increased over the 28 years with some declines in 1982 and 1994, reaching almost 100 million in 2002. In 1974 the number of tones of products delivered by pipeline was 5 million, this number rose until reaching 22 million in 1995 and then remained static till 2002.
As the graph suggests the original rate of rail vehicle was 40 million tones, which saw significant fluctuations, decreasing till 28 million in 1995 and climbed sharply until 41million tones in 2002, while water section experienced a similar trend, increasing steadily from 1974, dropping in 1998 until 52 million and rocketed in 2002 until 63 million.
