The graph shows how greenhouse gas emissions from oil, coal, and gas in the UK have changed over time.
Overall, the rate of carbon emissions from oil and coal decreased in varying degrees, while emissions from gas increased significantly, over the period. Moreover, despite being the smallest source at the beginning, gas rose markedly to become the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions by the end.
Gas had the highest level of carbon emissions for most of the period. Although the amount of emissions from gas was around 220 million tons in 1990, it underwent significant growth to approximately 330 million tons, becoming the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions by 2010.
However, greenhouse gas emissions from coal and oil decreased, with the former showing a bigger change. While coal was the most important source of carbon emissions at about 310 million tons in 1990, it decreased gradually to roughly 190 million tons, becoming the least important source by 2010. The figure for oil decreased slightly from approximately 270 million tons to around 210 million tons over time.
