The line graph compares the proportions of migrants and the level of unemployment in Ireland from 1988 to 2008. Units are measured in percentages and numbers.
Overall, the unemployment rate experienced a downward trend, but the reverse is true for the number of people leaving the country. Notably, both categories ended the period at relatively lower levels.
Starting with the unemployment rate, it began at 16% before dipping slightly to 13%, though only by a small amount. In 1993, however, it grew slightly to about 15%. From this point onward, the unemployment rate decreased continually, hitting a low of 5%. This figure then doubled to 10% at the end of the timeframe.
When it comes to the number of migrants, although this figure initially rose from 40,000 in 1988 to a peak of 65,000, it then fell to approximately 30,000 in 1991. After this year, the number of people saw minor fluctuations, and it finished at that level in 2003. By the end of the period, this number saw a consistent rise to 42,000.
