The graph shows information about how many UK citizens where employed by three economic sectors including; the public sector, the private sector, and the self-employed, over a ten-year period between 2000 and 2010.
Overall, what stands out of the graph is that there was a considerable downward trend in the private sector, while both the public and the self-employed fluctuated over the period in the question. Another interesting point is that the private sector was the most popular in 2000, but in 2010, the public sector employed more people than the others.
Looking at the details, as regards the public sector, it accounted for about 39% employment rate in 2000, and remained the same for the next two years. Between the year 2002 and 2005, this sector increased by around 11% and it was in 2003 that there was a shot up of approximately 9%. After this, it fell significantly to around 45% for over one year before rising steadily to just above 50% for the remaining period. If we look at the self-employed, the trend was similar. However, in the first-three years, it experienced a steady rise from under 20% in 2000, to 20% in 2003. Following this, the was a slight fall to it’s initial value for one year before increasing to dramtically to 30% in 2009 and remained the same in 2010.
By contrast, the employment rate of the private sector fell steadily throughout the period in question, starting from just under 50% in 2000, to 20% in 2010. Additionally, it was nearly the same with the public sector in 2003 at 40% and with the self-employed in 2007 at around 28%.
