The provided line graph elucidates the average salary per month in Japan and the cost of black and white and coloured TV during the two-decade period, from 1953 to 1973. The units are measured in Japanese currency (yen).
Looking from an overall perspective, it is noticeable from the graph that the typical monthly income in Japan generally experienced an upward trend, regardless of the reduction in the price of TV.
To start, at the beginning of the whole period, the cost of black and white TV was low, at exactly 100¥, this figure decreased gradually by 60%, from 1007 to nearly 40¥, from 1953 to 1968. Similarly, over the following 5 years, the cost of black and white TV saw a slight fall to approximately 35¥. Interestingly, coloured television were started to be sold only after 1958, before demonstrating a dramatic decline in the price of coloured TV from 180¥ to roughly 110¥ until 1963.
In terms of the average monthly earnings, despite a moderate increase, in the timeframe between 1953-1958, its figure grew substantially from 40¥ to 180¥ over the next 15 years. Surprisingly, at some point, the monthly salary of TV were exactly the same as the price of black and white TV, at 60¥, in 1963. Likewise, the average salary per month was also the same as the price of coloured TV, at 100¥, in 1968. In comparison, the difference between the cost of the two types of TV being the same as the average monthly salary was 40¥.
