The first bar graph demonstrates how many people married and divorced in the USA from 1970 to 2000, while the second one illustrates data on marital status of adults residing in America in the same period. Overall, what stands out is that albeit the number of marriages declined, they were more, compared to one of divorces’. It is also noteworthy that married adolescents peaked the chart throughout the given period.
Looking at the former chart first, it is evident that the proportion of married individuals stood at exactly 2.5 million from 1970 to 1980 prior to a slight decrease to 2 million in the last year, 2000. When it comes to divorced people, starting from a million in 1970, it rose insignificantly to just below 1.5 million in 1980 before gradually dropping and recovering to its initial position.
Turning to the marital status of American adults, married and widowed couples experienced a decline from 1970 to 2000, with the former from 70% to 60% and with the latter from approximately 9% to 3%. By contrast, the percentage of never-married (15%) and divorced adults (3%) has seen a slight surge, having stood at 20% and 9% in 2000.
