The line graph shows the proportion of energy produced from coal in Sweden, France, Denmark and Germany between 1995 and 2010.
Overall, the percentage of energy generated from coal decreased in all four countries over the period. Denmark and Germany showed the largest declines, while Sweden and France changed more slowly.
In 1995, Denmark had the highest figure at 60%, followed by Germany at about 55%. Sweden produced around 35% of its energy from coal, while France had the lowest percentage at 30%. By 2001, the figures for all countries had fallen. Denmark and Germany both decreased to around 30%, while Sweden dropped slightly to the same level. France also declined, reaching about 25%.
After 2001, Sweden continued to decrease gradually and remained stable at around 27% after 2004. France changed very little and finished at approximately 24% in 2010. Germany experienced the biggest fall, dropping to only 5% in 2007 before rising again to about 15% at the end of the period. Denmark continued to fall steadily and reached 10% in 2010, which was the lowest figure among the four countries.
