Overall, the proportion of coal energy decreased in all four countries. Denmark and Germany experienced the biggest declines, while Sweden and France changed more gradually.
In 1995, Denmark had the highest percentage of energy produced from coal at 60%, followed by Germany at about 55%. Sweden and France were lower, at 35% and 30% respectively. From 1995 to 2001, all countries saw a decline. Denmark dropped sharply to 30%, while Germany also fell significantly to the same level. Sweden decreased slightly to 30%, and France went down to around 25%.
After 2001, Sweden continued to fall slowly and then remained stable at approximately 27% until 2010. France showed only small changes and finished at about 24%. Germany experienced the most dramatic decrease, reaching just 5% in 2007 before rising again to around 15% in 2010. Denmark continued to decline steadily and ended at 10%, which was the lowest figure among the four countries.
