Band 6: The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample)

The line chart illustrates the percentage of the population aged 65 and over in three countries namely the USA, Sweden, and Japan over a period from 1940 to 2040.

Overall, it is clear that all figures in the three countries are predicted to increase. Also, the proportion of the population aged 65 and over in Japan is projected to be the biggest change over the period shown.

In 1940, there was 5 percent of the population aged 65 and over in Japan. This figure dropped slightly to about 4 percent in 1980 before increasing to 10 percent in 2030. The opposite trend was witnessed in the number of the population aged 65 and over in Sweden, which significantly increase from only 6 percent in 1940 to approximately 18 percent in 2030. Similarly, the percentage of the population aged 65 and over in the USA rise to nearly 16 percent in 2030, after starting at 10 percent in 1940.

At the end of the period, the number of the population aged 65 and over in Japan significantly go up to nearly 26 percent. Conversely, the figures for the population aged 65 and over in Sweden and the USA both slightly grow to 25 percent and 23 percent, respectively.
