Overall, there is a growth in the number of people over 65 years old, and this rise is predicted to continue, with Japan overtaking the USA and Sweden.
In 1940 the United States had the highest rate at approximately 9%. Both the USA and Sweden had a period of instability, and they went from having less than 10% of the populace aged 65 and over at the start of the period to having roughly 16% and 18% consequently. Moreover, they were projected to increase significantly until reaching a peak at around 25%.
In contrast, Japan had the lowest figures throughout the period, from 1940 to 2002 the numbers were lower than 5%. After this, it had a rapidly climb until 2024, where it reached approximately 10%. In addition, it was predicted a boom with peak around 28% in 2040 overtaking all the other countries.
