The bar graph illustrates the estimated population of elephants in Asia in the years 1994 and 2007.
Overall, the maximum number of elephants declined throughout the period in all countries except Chain and Combodia, where the elephant population increased minimally, while India was the only country with the largest population rates for both the years.
In 1997, there were nearly 10,000 Asian elephants in India and over 5,000 in Myanmar. The population figures of both countries declined in 2004, where India saw a dramatic decrease of around 2,500 and Myanmar’s figure fell slightly to below 5000.
Meanwhile, the number of elephants in Malaysia and Sri Lanka were similar in the first year, at over 2,500; however, the former country’s number decreased to approximately 1,000,while the latter fell minimally.
The elephant population of Thailand went down from around 3,000 to nearly 1,000 from 1997 to 2004, respectively. The number of Asian elephants in Vietnam and Cambodia were considerably similar in both years, with roughly 1,000, whereas China which had the lowest figures grew from approximately 500 to 1,000.
