Overall, in 2010, the weekly expenditures on rent and food were the highest in both the US and the UK. In the UK, spending on rent ranked the highest, followed by food, whereas American households spent the most on food. In both countries, spending on DVDs was the smallest category, accounting for the same proportion of total expenditures.
With regards to British people’s weekly household cost, the biggest proportion was spent on rent with a number of slightly below one-third whereas in the US, the largest proportion was spent on food with a proportion of a quarter of the total spending.
On the other hand, weekly expenses on transport and going out have the same level of number at 15% in both countries. Spending on books had a small number of 12% in the UK, similarly to that of the US. Expenditures on DVDS in both regions were the smallest with a proportion of only one-tenth.
