Overall, it is projected that percentages of children aged 0-14 years will decline dramatically until the end of the period, while percent of young people aged 15-24 years will lower around to their initial value after a slight increment. Both number of children and young people will increase in this time period.
Firstly, the rate of children accounted for 30% in 1958, whereas this rate was just below 15% for youngsters. The proportion of youth rose to approximately 17% in the next decade, while the propotion of children in Australian population fell by about 3%. The values for children and youth were around 20% and 14%, relatively. It is forecasted that the proportion for children will further decline and reach its lowest point of around 18%, whereas the rate for youth will regain its initial value of 14%, approximately.
Moreover, there were slightly more than 1 million children and 3 million young people in Australia in 1958. In subsequent 40 years, the figure for children more than doubled and levelled out at well over 2 million. Likewise, the indicator for youth grew up and levelled off at slightly less than 4 million. Until 2038, the predictions show that the value for children and young people will plateau at about 3.5 million and about 5.3 million, accordingly.
