First, in 1970, the percentage of men with employment in all countries was more than 70%. The US was the country with the highest rate of men and women employed with 86% and 78% respectively. Whereas Japan had the lowest rate for both males and females, accounting for 76% for men and 56% for women.
After 30 years, in 2000, the figure for all countries had decreased quite sharply. The USA still had the most men aged 60-64 employed with 78%, a small decrease of 8% from 1970. The country with the highest rate of women aged 60-64 with a job was Indonesia, at 50%, a 15% decline compared to 1970. Belgium saw a steep fall in the number of working women, from 52% to just 8% by 2000.
