Overall, Australia welcomed more and more visitors from the United Kingdom and the USA while ranking highest in 1995, Japanese tourists preferred to travel to this country less. In addition, backpacking was consistently the dominant choice but then decreased, travel agency was more and more popular but it was lower than backpacking.
Looking first at tourist numbers, Australia attracted 1.5 million Japanese tourists, which was around two times more than the figure for British tourists and three fold more than for American tourists in 1995. In 2005, both the UK and the US witnessed significant rises in tourist numbers, reaching an equal figure of 1.5 million. Meanwhile, for Japan, which declined to just 1 million during the same time.
As for the remaining types of travels, backpacking was the highest choice at around 1.5 million in 1995, before peaking the top spot of just over 2.5 million in 2000, followed by decreasing dramatically to around 1 million in 2005. Having an opposite differ, the figure for travel agemcy have a slight rise from approximately 300.000 in 1995 to be equal to the figure of backpacking in 2005 at almost 7 billion.
