France and Belgium had 25% and 17% respectively, while the UK had the lowest proportion of female parliamentarians at 18%. A significant surge in the percentage of female members of parliament was observed in France and Belgium in 2004, reaching 37% and 28% respectively. Subsequently, between 2008 and 2012, Germany and France experienced slight increases to 36% and 32% respectively, while Italy reached its peak at 39%. Meanwhile, the proportions of female parliamentarians in Belgium and the UK remained constant at 28% and 23% respectively by the end of the period.
The line graph clearly demonstrates the fluctuations and trends in the percentages of female members of parliament in the selected European countries. Despite minor variations, there was an overall positive progression in the representation of women in parliament from 2000 to 2012.
