The diagram illustrates the amount of the population in four Asian countries living in urban areas between 1970 and 2020, with prognosis for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, there was considerable increase in urban population in all four countries over the period, despite some minor fluctuations and this upward trend expected to stay until 2040. Also it is estimated that Malaysia’s figure will rise in future years.
In 1970 Philippines and Malaysia started with almost the same point, at 30%. Over the next 20 years, they swapped positions until Malaysia experienced a dramatic growth in 1990 that anticipated to continue till 2040 and reach over 80%.
In contrast, Philippines experienced a slight decline from this period, but after 2010 there was recover that end at a little more than 50%.
At the start of the period, Thailand stood at around 15% while the Indonesia was slightly higher, at approximately 18%. Both countries rose minimally and their trends intersected at around 30% in 2000. After this year population in Indonesia doubled in value, while Thailand figure stood at 30%, but it expected to surge after 2020.
