The graph illustrates the amount of elderly people of ages 65 and above living in 3 countries, namely Japan, Sweden and USA between 1940 and 2040.
Overall, it is clear that despite the increase in the number of old aged people in all 3 countries as compared to the past, USA will have the highest number in the future.
In 1940’s, although elderly people only contributed to around 10% of the total population of Japan, it was the country on top of the list followed by Sweden and USA with only around 7% and 5% of old people respectively. From 1940 to 1980, both Japan and Sweden saw a steady rise in the number of elderly people to about 15% in both countries. On the contrary, the levels in USA dropped below 5% after 1940 and remained stable till 1980. Just Before 2008 Sweden overtook Japan as 20% of its population consisted of elderly people till the year 2018, whereas the numbers in Japan were just below15% till the year 2020. The numbers in Sweden fluctuated after 1980. USA, on the other hand faced a gradual increase post 1980 and the levels reached 10% at the end of 2020. Although USA had the least population of those above 65 years from the beginning, in future it is expected to be on the top with 25% of elderly people, followed by Sweden and Japan with 25% and 23% respectively.
