The line chart illustrates the percentage of people who were aged 65 and above in Japan, Sweden and the USA from 1940 to the present, and gives a projection until 2040.
Overall, it is clear that the population of those aged 65 and over increased in all three countries over the period shown, and it is also expected to continue growing until 2040.
Looking at the chart in more detail, it is evident that the proportion of the population which were aged 65 and over in Japan stood lower than the other countries, at 1 in 20 per cent in 1940, and then there was a dip to roughly 3% before rising to around 8% in 2020. By 2040, the 65-and-over population is predicted to have increased sharply to approximately 27% and overtaken the two remaining countries.
In terms of the percentages of people who were aged 65 and over in the USA and Sweden, there was a similar parallel. These proportions in The USA and Sweden started at under 10% and about 6%, respectively, and fluctuated 5% and 20% from 1940 to the present. In 2040, it is anticipated to rise dramatically to 25% in Sweden and about 22% in the USA.
