Overall, the number of international visitors significantly increased between 2005 and 2017, followed by a dramatic decrease from 2017 to 2020. All four countries reached their peak in 2017 and their lowest point in 2020. France had the highest visitor count, while Thailand had the lowest over the period.
France and Spain attracted the highest number of visitors over the period, although their growth patterns were different. France’s visitor numbers steadily increased from 75 million in 2005 to 87 million in 2017. By contrast, Spain experienced slight fluctuations in the early years, with figures between 55 and 56 million before rising sharply to 82 million by 2017. However, both countries saw a dramatic decrease in 2020, with France falling to 40 million and Spain dropping to just 20 million.
On the other hand, Turkey and Thailand recorded the lowest visitor numbers between 2005 and 2017, with figures rising from 20 million to 46 million and from 11 million to 35 million. Both countries had small numbers at the beginning, but it followed with rapidly raise. And they experienced a sharp decrease in 2020, with Turkey dipping in 16 million and Thailand plunging in 7 million.
In summary, all countries had a climb even thought some of them fluctuating over the period, and it ended up with dramatic decrease between 2017 and 2020.
