Similarly, tourist numbers in Spain began at 30 million in 1990 and grew steadily over the period, reaching roughly 65 million by the end of the timeframe.
By contrast, Japan welcomed around 40 million overseas visitors in 1990, with this figure rising slightly to approximately 42 million in 2000, before declining to about 40 million in 2005. Towards the end of the period, the number fell significantly to roughly 25 million.
