The charts show how many international visitors came to Japan from 2008 to 2018, and the distribution of where those visitors originated from in 2018.
Overall, the preponderance of overseas travelers to Japan came from Asia as opposed to that of the other countries. It is also clear that the total number of these visits increased dramatically over the study period.
In 2008, there were nearly 10 million people visiting Japan, but after a period of relative stability, these figure started rising sharply from 2011 and onward. By 2018, this number had soared from a chart low of around 7 million visitors to over 30 million, becoming the highest figure on the chart.
Turning to the regions where these visitors came from, we can see that more than half of all the overseas visitors were from two countries : China (27%) and Korea (24%). Taiwan is in the third spot with 15%, which was twice as high as the figure of Hong Kong at 7%, and slightly higher than the total combined of the rest of Asia. The remaining visitors were from Europe and North American, at 6% each as well as Oceania accounting for 2%, which is the lowest portion on the chart.
