In 2008, nearly 10 million people paid a visit to Japan from other countries. This figure remained more or less unchanged until 2011, after which it started growing rapidly. From 2011 to 2018, the number of overseas visitors to this country quadrupled from around 7 million to over 30 million.
Turning to the pie chart, half the total tourists to Japan in 2008 came from China (27%) and then Korea (24%). Next on the list was Taiwan at 15%, which was twice as many as visitors from Hong Kong with 7%, while visits from the rest of Asia stood at 13%. The figure for Europe and North America was identical (6% each), with Oceania accounting for just 2% of visitors.
