Overall, size of US military increases over time. During the world war II, highest number of population joined the US armed forces.

In the year 1800, US military size negligible and after the start of war on 1812 , 0.5% of the population joined the armed force during war of 1812and then this number decline to zero. During the Mecican war from 1846 to 1848 only about 0.2% of US citizen participated in US military. However this number rises to 3% during the four-year period Civil War from 1861 to 1865 and then almost all people left the military untill 1900.

At the start of 20th century when Spanish American war happened only 0.1% of the populaiton joined the US military. Meanwhile this number signifacantly changed as almost 3% of the population joined the US armed force for the first world war. Similarly this number skyrocketed to 9% as start of the World war II from 1941 to 1945. After the world war II US military size decreased and reached to about 2.2% in the middle of the century and keep fluctuated and decline slightly and reached at around 0.5% by the end of the period.
