The map below demonstrates the town of Garlsdon and two proposed locations for a new supermarket, labelled S1 and S2. It also shows the town’s surroundings, transport links and the distances to a three nerby towns.
Overall, the two proposed sites are considerably differ from each other in terms of their location. S1 is situated in the north-western part of Garlsdon, outside the built-up area, whereas S2 is located in. the southern part of a town centre. Both sites are accessible by main roads, although S2 is also close to the railway.
S1 is positioned to the north-west of the city centre, in an area of countryside. It is relatively close to the main road leading towards Hindon, which is 12 kilometres from Garlsdon with a population of 10000. Another major road runs through the southern part of the town and provides access to Branson, located 16 kilometres away and home to 15000 people. Therefore S1 would be relatively accessible to people living in the surroundings areas as well as those in Garlsdon.
S2, in contrast, is located much closer to the centre of Garlsdon and is surrounded by the town’s built up areas. Moreover, the site is situated near the railway line, which runs across the town from the north-west towards the south-east. It is also close to the main road leading towards Crandson, which is 25 kilometres from Garlsdon and has the largest population of three surrounding towns, at 29000.
Overall, while S1 offers a more peripheral location with access to the surrounding towns, S2 is more centrally located wich benefits from both railway and road connections.
