The maps compare the changes that took place in the town of Frenton between 1990 and 2012.
Overall, the area underwent substantial development during this period. Frenton changed from a town with several green spaces and low-rise buildings into a more built-up and modern area, with a clear increase in residential, commercial and leisure facilities.
In 1990, Frenton featured a number of natural areas, including playing fields with trees in the north and a café surrounded by a park in the centre. The eastern part of the town was occupied by houses, while a theatre and small shops were located in the southern area. Essential public services such as a school, hospital and library were situated close to the main road.
By 2012, many of these features had been replaced. The houses were demolished and substituted with blocks of flats, and the café and park were redeveloped into a hotel and golf course. Furthermore, the theatre was converted into a cinema, the shops became a supermarket, and a technopark was constructed in place of the wooded area in the southwest.
