Band 7: The maps below show the changes that have take place at Queen Mary Hospital since its construction in 1960. (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample)

The three maps highlight the differences at Queen Mary Hospital over the period of 40 years.

Overall, the area underwent significant modernisation with the replacement of shopping centres and farmland, while the cancer centre was expanded. New infrastructural development included the addition of a nursing school.

In 1960, a simple layout consisted of a hospital in the northeast and a car park in the south-east, which remained fixed over the entire period, followed by a shopping centre in the north-west and farmland below it. By 1980, farmland and shopping centre were replaced by construction of a nursing school, cancer centre and a pharmacy, respectively.

There were some further developments that took place by 2020. The most significant change involved relocation of the nursing school to the south due to expansion of the cancer centre, occupying the entire west direction. The car park had also been shifted to the eastern direction and shrunk in size, illustrating the increased focus of the hospital on its healthcare services.
