The line chart indicates the share of three categories of offenses: car theft, house burglary and street robbery in England and Wales between 1970 and 2000.
Broadly speaking, the three trends followed a stable ranking over the span of given years. Car theft remained the most prevalent crime, while street robbery was the lowest. In addition, house burglary ranked second.
The initial car theft rate was 0.4%, before increasing dramatically from 1970 onward and reaching a peak of 1.4%. However, it decreased gradually in the following years and finished the period at 0.8%, twice as high as its initial figure. By contrast, the proportion of street robbery experienced a slight fluctuation throughout the period. Notably, it started and ended the period at the same level.
In comparison, the trend of house burglary showed a similar trajectory to car theft. In 1970, it accounted for 0.3%, holding the second position. Afterward, house burglary witnessed a twofold increase, reaching 0.6% in 1990. Nevertheless, it moderately dropped to 0.4% by the year 2000, which was half the last figure for car theft.
