The bar chart compares the proportions of internet users across different age groups in Australia who made online purchases in 2007 and 2009.
Overall, it is clear that online shopping was more popular among middle-aged users than younger or older adults in both years. Additionally, every age group experienced an increase in the proportion of online shoppers over the two-year period.
In 2007, people aged 26-35 and 36-45 were the most active online shoppers, with around 31% and 28%, respectively. By 2009, these figures rose to roughly 33% for 26-35-year-olds and peaked at 38% for the 36-45 group, making it the category with the highest proportion overall.
Among younger users aged 15-25, the percentage who shopped online increased modestly from about 20% in 2007 to 23% in 2009. A slightly larger rise was seen among 46-55-year-olds, whose participation climbed from 22% to 28% during the same period.
Older adults were consistently the least likely to purchase goods online. For those aged 56-65, the figure grew from 12% to around 18%, while the 65+ group rose from only 5% in 2007 to approximately 12% in 2009, despite remaining the lowest overall.
