The pie charts show a comparison of expected changes in the proportion of energy storage in gigawatts (GW) in 2015 with that of 2040.
Overall, fossil fuels had more than half of the proportion in 2015, but this is going to decrease by one-third, along with declines in nuclear and other renewable resources. However, the percentages of wind and solar energy are experiencing significant growth in the future, resulting in almost double the amount of gigawatts in 2040.
Looking at the details, the capacity of fossil fuels was 64% and was the largest compared to other energy resources combined in 2015, and it is going to remain in 1st place with a decline to 44%. It is also predicted that the percentages of nuclear and other sustainable resources will decrease by 2% and 1%, respectively, in 2040.
Significantly, the projected proportion of solar energy will jump to 18% and will become the third largest capacity in 2040, from the lowest in 2015. Along with solar energy, there is going to be a 7% rise in wind energy, and it is going to surpass nuclear energy in 2040.
