The pie charts show the comparison of expected changes in the proportion of energy storage in gigawatts (GW) in 2015 with the year of 2040.
Overall, Fossil fuels had more than a half of proportion in 2015 but it is going to decrease by 1/3, along with the decline in nuclear and other renewable resources. However, the percentages of wind and solar energy are having significant growths in the future, resulting almost double the amount of the gigawatts in 2040.
Looking at the details, the capacity of fossil fuels was at 64% and was the largest, compared to other energy resources combined in 2015, and it is going to still remain at the 1st place with a decline to 44%. It is also predicted that the percentages of nuclear and other sustainable resources will decrease by 2% and 1%, respectively in 2040.
Significantly, the projected proportion of solar energy will jump up to 18%, and will become the3rd largest capacity in 2040, from the lowest in 2015. Along with the solar energy, there is going to be a rise of 7% in wind energy and is going to surpass the nuclear energy in 2040.
