The pie charts illustrate the proportions of five kinds of books sold by bookseller in the years 1972, 1992 and 2012. Overall, the proportions of adult and children’s fiction, increased over the period, with the former showing the most significant rise. In contrast, the shares of the remaining categories – travel books, biography and other unspecified genres – declined noticeably.
Starting with adult fiction, in 1972 it accounted for 20%, but after two decades it made up 45% and became the best-selling books in that year. Children’s fiction also experienced a major but noticeable rise over time; in 2012 it recorded 25%. The opposite was true for travel books, which were at 15% at the beginning of the period and, after rising 3 percentage points, declined to 10% at the end of the period.
Turning to the biography books, which constituted 20% in 1972, we see a dramatic decrease after twenty years, down to 8%. Meanwhile, others were the highest at the start of the trend, but still declined significantly to 12%.
