The pie chart present illustrates, in what ways, electricity is consumed in an average English home. Overall, the allocation of electricity resources is primarily determined by demand, with heating rooms and water representing the largest consumption sector.
Heating comprises a large part of a household’s electricity consumption. More than half of energy expenditure in the typical home goes toward heating rooms and water. Increased demand in this area is due to the constant need for thermal comfort throughout most of the year around colder areas. The next largest category of energy consumption is the home appliances. The ovens, kettles, washing machines, and dryers that most people consider indispensable in food preparation and household maintenance constitute about 18% of the total electricity bill.
In comparison, less frequently used items such as electric vacuum cleaners, food mixers, various power tools, lighting appliances, and even televisions and radios account for a much smaller percentage, around 15%.
