By contrast, renewable energy became more prominent over the period, while the contribution of coal showed a significant decrease.
In 2008, oil accounted for the largest share of energy production at 27%, followed closely by coal at 28%. Gas contributed 22%, whereas nuclear power and renewable energy made up smaller proportions at 11% and 9%, respectively.
By 2017, oil was still leading energy source, but its proportions had fallen to 23%. Coal fell dramatically to 17%. While gas grew to 23% overtaking coal as the second largest source. Nuclear also rose to 17%. Renewable energy was shown doubled from 9% to 15%.
